Starting from the trauma experienced during the 1980 earthquake in Basilicata, Donato Sansone retraces his own life through the characters of The Wizard of Oz, projecting himself toward a visionary future in which fear and love dance in balance.
Donnyland is a dreamlike and autobiographical journey between live action and animation, which tells, through a crossover of stories and fantastic characters drawn from iconic children’s narratives, the coming-of-age path of Donny, a child who must confront his tics and all the psychological fragilities resulting from the trauma of the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. A waking dream accompanies the protagonist in overcoming the trials of life, from 1980 to the present day, up to the age of fifty, thanks to the help of real characters projected into the world of fantasy.
The world of the Oz books is the main setting in which the story unfolds, but it is not the only one: Donny experiences a conflicted love relationship with “Alice” from Alice in Wonderland and must face a confrontation with a dark alter ego inspired by Walt Disney’s Black Pete, also passing through the fantastic world of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and even referencing the Brothers Grimm.
