Four confessions on the theme of silence take the viewer to the edge of his daily life in incredibly fascinating places that are difficult to reach in any other way.
Van is an oil well maintenance worker in Texas. He works in the desert, within the largest oil field in the United States. Danilo is the chief engineer on a transoceanic cargo ship, living each day in the heart of the hull, where a colossal engine resides. Andrea is an Italian scientist who has spent his life among mathematical formulas and the absolute silence of anechoic chambers. Vito has spent half of his life managing slot machines in bars and brothels in Switzerland; today, he oversees a vast reinforced concrete waste pit at a large waste-to-energy plant.
These men are, unknowingly, at the foundation of the long chain of creation, transportation, commercialization and disposal of the objects that feed the excesses of our way of life. They are part of the same story without ever having met.
The objects we believe we need every day begin and end their journey within industrial and scientific environments that are mechanically isolated and ghostlike. These men are monks within temples of steel and concrete, repeating the same mechanical liturgy each day, in solitude and deprivation.
Four confessions on the theme of silence lead the viewer to the edges of their own everyday life, into places that are both extraordinarily compelling and otherwise nearly impossible to access.
