La loro percezione del carcere come mondo sommerso è rispecchiata dalle illustrazioni (realizzate in collaborazione con madri e bambini) che ne ritraggono ricordi passati e i loro sogni futuri. Le animazioni esaltano questo mondo surreale usando la metafora di un mondo sottomarino dove gli animali animati sono liberi di muoversi e respirare.

Un racconto di dolore ma anche resilienza e speranza, al confine tra realtà e immaginazione, che sa parlare a tutti e connettere con i ricordi personali dell’infanzia.

Their perception of prison as a submerged world is mirrored by illustrations (made in collaboration with mothers and children) depicting their past memories and their dreams for the future. Animations enhance this surreal world using the metaphor of an underwater world where animated animals are free to move and breathe.

A tale of pain but also resilience and hope, at the boundary between reality and imagination, which is able to speak to everyone and connect with personal memories of childhood.

Quando ho visitato per la prima volta un nuovo istituto di custodia morbida per madri e bambini che vivono insieme in prigione, suoni inaspettati si sono infiltrati nelle mie orecchie senza dare il tempo di prepararsi. Urla, allarmi, cancelli cigolanti, apertura e chiusura di porte creano un’atmosfera speciale dove l’ambiente difficilmente si sintonizza con ciò che gli occhi possono percepire.

Il piccolo giardino era circondato da una staccionata di legno che ai bambini è vietato attraversare. Sopra il recinzione, telecamere di sorveglianza ogni 20 metri. In lontananza, camion della polizia e guardie carcerarie. Non sono stato in grado di “definire” i miei sentimenti, nel senso che probabilmente la situazione era troppo ambigua e complessa per essere afferrata.

Mi sentivo come se fossi dentro The Truman Show: un mondo finto, espressamente concepito per il protagonista, un ragazzo che lì è nato ed è cresciuto, come molti dei bambini che ho conosciuto in questo carcere “attenuato”. ho chiesto a me stesso molte domande: come percepiscono i bambini questo spazio? Ciò che è stato loro spiegato, i bambini si rendono conto che si tratta di una distorsione realtà, costruita appositamente per loro? Si sentono ingannati?

Per rispondere a queste e a molte altre domande, abbiamo lavorato insieme per più di due anni in diverse istituzioni di reclusione con psicologi, educatori e illustratori. In stretta collaborazione con i protagonisti, mamme e bambini, abbiamo costruito una sperimentazione documentario per esprimere i loro punti di vista e il loro senso dello spazio in una reclusione.

Ma vogliamo anche mostrare le loro fantasie di fuga, le rifugi, le paure ei sogni. Emozioni e desideri che sono universali e riguardano l’infanzia di ciascuno di noi

When I first visited a new soft custody institute for mothers and children living together in prison, unexpected sounds seeped into my ears without giving time to prepare. Screams, alarms, squeaky gates, opening and closing doors create a special atmosphere where the environment hardly attunes to what eyes can perceive.

The small garden was surrounded by a wooden fence that children are forbidden to cross. Above the enclosure, surveillance cameras every 20 meters. In the distance, police trucks and prison guards. I wasn’t able to ‘define’ my feelings, meaning that probably, the situation was too ambiguous and complex to grasp.

I was feeling as if I was inside The Truman Show: a fake world, expressly conceived for the main character, a boy who was born and had grown there, like many of the children I met in this ‘attenuated’ prison. I asked myself many questions: how do children perceive this space? What has been explained to them, do children realise that this is a distorted reality, specially built for them? Do they feel cheated?

To answer these and the many other questions, we have worked for more than two years in different confinement institutions, together with psychologists, educators and illustrators. In strict collaboration with the protagonists, mothers and children, we built an experimental documentary to express their points of view and their sense of space in a confinement.

But we also want to show their fantasies of escape, the shelters, the fears and dreams. Emotions and desires that are universal and concern the childhood of each of us
